Difficulties in writing can include challenges with handwriting, expressing thoughts on paper, or using appropriate writing mechanics. Some students may come to us with a Specific Learning Difference in writing (also known as dysgraphia), while others simply need more guidance to keep up with grade level expectations. Our Learning Specialists provide direct instruction that is personalized for each individual’s needs.
Handwriting approaches guide students to develop a positive pencil grip, understand letter formation and spacing, and organize their words on the page. writing organization on the paper. We do encourage students to handwrite both in print and cursive.
Multisensory approaches, such as Handwriting Without Tears and Diana King’s Handwriting programming, promote opportunities for student success.
Students who struggle with oral expression sometimes also have difficulties expressing themselves through writing. They find it challenging to compose sentences, use exact words, and organize their thoughts on paper.
Using graphic organizers, checklists, and precise instruction, we provide opportunities for students to learn how to capture their thoughts accurately through writing.
We use strategies outlined by The Writing Revolution (formerly known as Teaching Basic Writing Skills) and Institute for Excellence in Writing as part of our direct instruction model. These highly effective materials empower students and reduce the perceived burdens associated with learning to read and write. This leaves children free to think, learn, and grow.
Our writing approach includes fundamentals in writing mechanics, grammar, language usage, expression, word choice, and sentence structure.
